We sat down with Diane, one of our Healthy Heroes, to ask her about her experience at Ciccotti.
I had minimal strength and balance. I have had Multiple Sclerosis since 1994, and in 2010 I had shaped beamed radiation on a small brain tumor (meningioma) on the left side of my head, I had my aortic valve replaced in 2014 and a pacemaker inserted in 2015. Lastly, I had a bout of cancer with surgery and six months of chemo by the end of 2016. These medical issues left me with many challenges. The biggest challenge was the ability to keep my balance and not fall, and have the strength the walk any distance with my walker. I completed two years of physical therapy but realized I still needed more help gaining balance and strength.
I joined a few years leaving the workforce in 1999, going out on disability. I started out in the aqua exercise program and continued with that until the end of 2013. I have been a resident of the Town of Colonie since 1984 so I was aware of the Center when it was built and knew what it had to offer.
I have been working with a personal trainer, Kyle Sharp. He has helped me improve my balance and overall strength. He has taken the time to understand my issues and challenges.
Through the sessions with Kyle, I have been able to improve my strength and balance. I have gone from losing my balance and falling frequently, to falling only about once a week. I am able to walk about 30 feet without feeling completely exhausted.
Yes. I have been very happy with the professionalism shown by the entire staff at the Ciccotti Center. When I first joined, I enjoyed the water exercise programs for many years. The Center offers many features for all members including, the water features for young children, child care for parents, basketball, weight room, and many specialized programs through the years for other members.
Thanks, Diane for sharing your story. For more information, on training and programming at the Ciccotti visit the Member Services desk or call (518) 867-8920.
